Top 5 iPhone Apps for Today’s Mama

Submitted by ghada on Friday, 18 December 20092 Comments

Here is a list of the top 5 iPhone apps that have been life savers for me in 2009 and are so darn good that I am positive I will be using them well in to 2010. The best thing about each app is that it is free, that’s right free, which makes them even better. I am willing to pay for apps, but I have found some pretty awesome free ones too. The other thing that most of these apps have in common is their web app version that makes it doubly easy to sync informationbetween your iPhone and your desktop. This list is a combination of apps that will help you stay organised, sane, happy, healthy and rockin’.

So here goes, my list of must have apps for the on-the-go-busy-as-heck-hard-working-mama (in no particular order):

Action Method: Add an action step

Action Method: Easily create lists/taks or what they call “action steps” and add them to a project or delegate them to someone else. The people you delegate to do not even have to be on Action Method for this to work. You stay in touch of what needs to be done and when. Action steps are also color coded in terms of urgency. Why I like this: Having a centralized to do list is great and being able to add to it on the go is even better. A user interface that is sleek and intuitive is always a plus. Login into the web version anytime or purchase their hardcopy paper products for good ole fashioned written to do lists. How to use it: Create project for marketing campaigns and add the action steps you will need to pull each campaign off, create a month by month project in the form of a blog calendar, look ahead at what reviews/giveaways/special reports you want to create for your blog, shopping lists, general to-do lists and so much more.

Evernote: Ok, so Master P is nearly two and a half, but I must confess I still have baby brain. The symptoms are having a brain like a sieve, brought on by lack of sleep. I sometimes

find myself in the grocery store wondering what the  heck I’m suppose to buy. In comes Evernote where I can create visual, written or voice notes on the fly and arange them into different notebooks. Why I like this:  All notes are attached to your location, as I am a visual person I can often remember where I saw something but not the name. With Evernote, you can search your notes by location or a tag you might have added to it. Photo notes are also searchable, though I haven’t used this feature as much. How to use it: Take a picture of a new kid’s storefront that you found in the city, tag it with “kids, clothing, shop, store” search for it later through Evernote to find out exactly where it can be found and even what it was called. Also comes with the free web version or upgraded version with more storage.

Shazzam: an oldie but a goddie, Shazzam taps into my inner muso by letting me know the name of the song and singer that I am listening to. Back in the day (pre-baby brain),I used the know the name of just about every song on the radio and all the words as well, my sister used to call me the human jukebox. Now, with Shazzam, all I have to do is hold my iPhone up to the radio and it will tell me scads of info on the song playing as well as an option to buy it. Note to self: not a good idea to Shazzam in the car while driving! Why I like this: Simple app, but so useful in my opinion! How to use it: Hold the listening end of your iPhone up to the radio so that Shazzam can process what its hearing. It will alert you when it has found the information. Check your screen for the lowdown on the song. Easy.

Runkeeper: post run stats

Runkeeper: post run stats

Runkeeper: The newest addition to my iphone app collection, this little baby will log and map your runs, give a readout of your pace and speed. A recent winner at the Mashable Open Awards, this app is bound to be the social running app of 2010. If you’ve had even the slightest squizz of this site in the past 6 weeks, you’ll know that I am on my way to a 5K at the end of January, this app has been phenomenal in my runs. Why I like this: Beginner and seasoned runners can’t say enough about this app – great for goal setting and seeing how you have progressed in your running. At a teeny tiny fraction of the cost of a Garmin or Nike+ you get the same benefits. How to use it: Start up your playlist and then start up your runkeeper, it will save your entire run on a map. If you get the paid version you can program in intervals and other cues as part of the program.

Nike Training Club: This app works better on the iPhone than its web version that is too clunky and takes ages to load. With this app, you can take your strength training routines on the go. Watch the how-to videos for exercises like High Knee Skip or Parachuter Push up, then start the built-in timer so that you can do 2

minute intervals. Why I like this: I love being outdoors in the summer and this is a great way to take the gym with me. With 2 minute bursts of exercises I feel like I can do anything. As I mentioned before, I’m visual, so the video explanations of each exercise helps alot. Oh, and did I mention that its just for women. How to use it: Sign up online and setup a routine based on what you are hoping to achieve, or just boot it up on the iPhone and go through the generic program.

What have been your iPhone app must haves of 2009? I love hearing about new apps.

The Nike training club app seems really cool. It's too bad I don't own an Iphone, or I would get the app myself. Thanks for sharing. This is an awesome post. Am going to thumb it up. Visiting from MBC Stumble Club.
